The police in Lagos have said that the senior pastor of the House of the Rock Church, Paul Adefarasin, has been cleared of wrongdoing after he was captured in a viral video that showed him holding what looked like a firearm.

In a statement signed by Abimbola Adebisi, the Lagos state police command spokesperson, the police said the cleric voluntarily reported himself at the force headquarters for questioning over the incident.

The police explained that the investigation showed that what the pastor was holding in the viral clip was a "stun gun", and not a lethal weapon.

Pastor Adefarasin surrenders to police

The clergyman voluntarily appeared before police authorities on Tuesday, June 17, 2025, in response to public uproar and police interest triggered by the video.

In an earlier official statement shared via their X (formerly Twitter) handle, the Lagos police command confirmed that the cleric turned himself in and was cooperating with detectives.

The police reiterated that no individual, regardless of social or religious status, is above the law.

The latest development brings to an end the months-long saga involving the cleric. Investigators had earlier reviewed the allegation that Adefarasin used a firearm-like item during what appeared to be a road rage episode, while in an unregistered vehicle.

Nigerians react as police clear Pastor Adefarasin

The police's decision to discontinue the case has started generating reactions from some Nigerians. Below are some of their reactions:

Akin Omo Akin questioned the police's position:

"You said on the 17th of June that it's prohibited equipment. What has changed? Anyway, THIS IS NIGERIA!"

AIM asked if everyone can now hold a stun gun:

"'The Lagos State Police Command has determined that there are no sufficient grounds to proceed with the matter. The case is hereby discontinued.' Ladies and gentlemen, is the Nigerian Police saying everybody should have a stun gun with them for protection??? I'm asking ooo"

Bosses made satirical reactions to the report:

"I love this. It sets a good precedent. We can carry stun guns without police harassing us or calling them illegal. Good."

Evans wrote:

"Now just imagine if police catch you with a 'stun gun' and you aren't a 'celebrity'. Your bail is from 500k upwards, with abeg and some nights in the cell."

Damilare said:

"We are expecting that the law is for the poor."

Legit.ng earlier reported that a TV presenter reacting to the gun clip, concluded that Pastor Paul Adefarasin had anger issues and had no right to pull out a taser on the young guy who only had a camera on him. She noted that he could have driven off without causing a scene.

Also, she referenced an earlier event where the pastor had allegedly stepped out of his car to deal with someone. Her bold comment triggered online reactions.
