Trump Fires Labor Stats Chief Following Weak Jobs Report

· Rolling Stone

Donald Trump has heralded a “Golden Age” of the United States, and he’s determined to do whatever it takes to project a gilded image — including cleansing the government of anyone who dares report the reality of what his policies are doing to the economy.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics reported on Friday that job growth had stagnated throughout the country in the month of July. The economy only added 73,000 new jobs last month, far less than expected. Meanwhile, unemployment rose to 4.2 percent, and the job growth estimates for May and June were revised down by a combined 258,000 jobs.

Trump is not happy that the job market is slowing, and rather than consider that his flailing, impulsive economic policies and on-again, off-again tariffs might be part of the problem, the president has fired the commissioner of Bureau of Labor Statistics, which released the report.

“I was just informed that our Country’s ‘Jobs Numbers’ are being produced by a Biden Appointee, Dr. Erika McEntarfer, the Commissioner of Labor Statistics, who faked the Jobs Numbers before the Election to try and boost Kamala’s chances of Victory,” Trump alleged baselessly on Truth Social, hours after the numbers were released.

“We need accurate Jobs Numbers. I have directed my Team to fire this Biden Political Appointee, IMMEDIATELY. She will be replaced with someone much more competent and qualified. Important numbers like this must be fair and accurate, they can’t be manipulated for political purposes,” the president added.

NBC News reported shortly after Trump’s post that McEntarfer was indeed fired from her post. The Senate confirmed McEntarfer in 2024 by a vote of 86-8. CNN’s Phil Mattingly notes that Vice President J.D. Vance, then a senator from Ohio, was among those who favored her appointment.

Trump continued to insist on Truth Social that the economy is “BOOMING under ‘TRUMP,’” despite his accusations of sabotage against the Federal Reserve, which refuses to lower interest rates at Trump’s direction.

“Jerome ‘Too Late’ Powell should also be put ‘out to pasture,’” Trump wrote of the chairman of the Fed, who he has been suggesting should be fired for months. He continued to bash Powell in another post conspiracy theorizing about the jobs numbers later on Friday.

“In my opinion, today’s Jobs Numbers were RIGGED in order to make the Republicans, and ME, look bad,” he wrote. “Just like when they had three great days around the 2024 Presidential Election, and then, those numbers were ‘taken away’ on November 15, 2024, right after the Election, when the Jobs Numbers were massively revised DOWNWARD, making a correction of over 818,000 Jobs — A TOTAL SCAM. Jerome “Too Late” Powell is no better! But, the good news is, our Country is doing GREAT!”

Trump has been dragging the nation into the pits of authoritarianism for years now, but to have the president fire the head of an independent agency for reporting statistics that don’t conform to his delusions is another step into an abyss the nation is going to have a hard time pulling itself out of.
