Trump Slams ‘Second-Tier Senator’ Who Voted With Dems on Stock Trading Ban

· Rolling Stone

In December of 2020, amid as Donald Trump pushed conspiracies that the 2020 election had been fraudulently stolen from him, Josh Hawley became the first Republican senator to declare that they would object to the certification of the Electoral College vote. On the morning of January 6, 2021, Hawley (R-Mo.) pumped his fist as a mob of protesters marched on the Capitol, and within hours would have Hawley running out of the building in search of safety. Hawley has been one of the fiercest and most prominent defenders of the MAGA movement, and on Wednesday the president rewarded him by calling him a “second-tier Senator” who has become a “pawn” of the Democrats.

The dispute centers around a piece of legislation that would ban members of Congress from trading or owning individual stocks. The measure advanced out of the Senate Committee on Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee on Wednesday, thanks to Hawley breaking with his own party and voting with Democrats in favor of the ban“I practice what I preach,” Hawley said. “I don’t have individual stocks, I don’t trade in stocks, I’m not a billionaire — unlike others on this committee. And what I think is [that] the American people are sending us a clear message.”

Trump was incensed, particularly over an amendment submitted by Sen. Rick Scott (R-Fla.) targeting Former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) that ultimately failed to make it into the legislation. “Why would one ‘Republican,’ Senator Josh Hawley from the Great State of Missouri, join with all of the Democrats to block a Review, sponsored by Senator Rick Scott, and with the support of almost all other Republicans, of Nancy Pelosi’s Stock Trading over the last 25 years,” Trump wrote on Truth Social.

“The Democrats, because of our tremendous ACHIEVEMENTS and SUCCESS, have been trying to ‘Target’ me for a long period of time, and they’re using Josh Hawley, who I got elected TWICE, as a pawn to help them,” Trump added. “I wonder why Hawley would pass a Bill that Nancy Pelosi is in absolute love with – He is playing right into the dirty hands of the Democrats.”

“I don’t think real Republicans want to see their President, who has had unprecedented success, TARGETED, because of the ‘whims’ of a second-tier Senator named Josh Hawley!” the president concluded.

During a hearing over the legislation earlier on Wednesday, Scott claimed that he and Republicans would oppose the ban because all it did was “attack people because they make money.”
