Bengaluru Police arrested 21-year-old Aarav Hanoy, the main suspect in the murder of Assam-based vlogger Maya Gogoi, whose body was found in a service apartment in Indira Nagar. Aarav was apprehended outside Karnataka and is expected to be brought to Bengaluru later tonight, Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) East confirmed.
A native of Kerala’s Thottada in Kannur, Aarav worked as a student counsellor at a private institution in Bengaluru. He and Maya, 19, had been in a relationship for six months after meeting on social media. Police believe tensions in their relationship may have led to the murder.
Maya’s body was discovered on Tuesday after apartment staff, alerted by a foul smell, unlocked the room where she was found lying on the bed with severe injuries to her chest and head. The cause of death was identified as a deep wound to her chest. The body showed signs of decomposition, indicating the crime occurred late Sunday night.
Investigations revealed that Aarav had premeditated the murder, purchasing a nylon rope online and carrying a knife. CCTV footage showed Aarav leaving the apartment alone early Tuesday morning. Police have also questioned the driver who transported him, gathering crucial evidence to build the case.
Maya, originally from Kailash Nagar in Guwahati, had been living in Bengaluru with her sister. She worked in Koramangala. On Friday, she informed her sister that she would not return home that evening due to an office party and later extended her absence into the weekend.
Aarav and Maya had checked into the service apartment on Sunday, November 24. The police also believe he stayed in the suite rooms with the body for two days after which he fled the scene.
