At least four labourers died of suffocation on Sunday after they entered an underground water tank for cleaning at an under-construction site in Mumbai's Nagpada, police said.
The incident took place at around 11:30 am on Sunday when five contract workers entered a tank at an under-construction building, Bismillah Space, for cleaning and lost consciousness.
Following the incident, others present at the spot alerted the fire brigade. After rescuing the trapped workers, authorities rushed them to the nearby state-run JJ Hospital where four of them were declared dead upon arrival.
Another labourer, who was trapped with the others, is in a stable condition, police said.
Officials from the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation, along with the police, are currently present at the spot. The police have launched a probe into the incident, said an official.
