Assam’s evolving assembly trends are now firmly tilting in favour of the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance, which has crossed the symbolic 100-seat mark in the 126-member House as counting progresses.
What is unfolding is shaping up to be a decisive mandate, with the NDA not just maintaining an early lead but converting it into a commanding position across the state.
The scale of the advantage suggests one of the alliance’s strongest performances in Assam so far, as multiple rounds of counting continue to reinforce its dominance.
With the NDA now leading in over 100 constituencies, the early trends point to a clear consolidation of voter support behind the ruling alliance.
The opposition remains well behind in comparison, with Congress and other parties trailing significantly as the gap widens through successive counting updates.
BJP-LED ALLIANCE SET FOR STRONGEST SHOWING YET
The NDA is currently leading in 100 seats (as of 11.50 am), placing it firmly in control of the unfolding mandate.
Within the alliance, the BJP and its partners together form the dominant bloc, while opposition parties remain significantly behind in early trends. The Congress is leading in 24 seats, while other parties and independents account for just 2.
This marks a sharp consolidation of support for the ruling alliance in comparison to earlier election cycles.
HIMANTA BISWA SARMA LEADS FROM JALUKBARI
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma is leading from Jalukbari, reinforcing the BJP’s strong opening across key constituencies.
Several ministers from his cabinet are also maintaining leads, including Ranoj Pegu in Dhemaji, Pijush Hazarika in Jagiroad, Ashok Singhal in Dhekiajuli, Prashanta Phukan in Dibrugarh and Bimal Borah in Tingkhong.
HISTORICAL TREND SHOWS DRAMATIC SHIFT
The seat-share trajectory over the past two decades highlights a clear realignment in Assam’s politics.
In 2006, the Congress-led bloc held 56 seats compared to 34 for the BJP+ and 36 for others. By 2011, Congress peaked at 78 seats while BJP+ dropped to 27.
A reversal began in 2016, when the BJP-led alliance surged to 86 seats against Congress’s 26. The momentum continued in 2021 with BJP+ at 79 and Congress at 30.
The latest 2026 trends now show BJP+ at 100 seats, Congress at 24, and others reduced to just 2, marking a steep decline for the opposition bloc.
CONGRESS STRUGGLES IN KEY BATTLEGROUNDS
Congress state president Gaurav Gogoi is trailing in Jorhat against BJP’s Hitendranath Goswami in early rounds of counting.
Meanwhile, former Congress leaders Pradyut Bordoloi and Bhupen Borah, now contesting on BJP tickets, are leading in Dispur and Bihpuria respectively, reflecting shifting political alignments in the state.
CLOSE CONTESTS AND SHIFTING LEADS
In Khowang, AJP’s Lurinjyoti Gogoi, who had initially led, is now behind BJP’s Chakradhar Gogoi as counting progresses.
AGP president Atul Bora is leading in Bokakhat, while working president Keshab Mahanta is ahead in Kaliabor, strengthening the alliance’s overall position.
Raijor Dal’s Akhil Gogoi is trailing in early trends, adding to the NDA’s advantage across multiple regions.
HIGH TURNOUT SETS THE CONTEXT
Polling for all 126 constituencies was held on April 9 in a single phase, recording an 85.96 per cent turnout from nearly 2.5 crore voters.
With counting still unfolding across 40 centres in 35 districts, the early trends point towards a decisive NDA lead, though final outcomes will continue to evolve through the day.
