The Special Investigation Team (SIT) on Sunday filed a chargesheet against the MLA of the ruling CPI(M) and Malayalam actor M Mukesh in a rape case.

The chargesheet claims that there is digital evidence against Mukesh in the case. The evidence includes WhatsApp chats and email messages between Mukesh and the survivor.

The chargesheet was filed at Ernakulam Judicial Magistrate Court. The SIT also said that it has received circumstantial evidence and witness statements, news agency ANI reported.

The case is that Mukesh sexually assaulted an actress by promising her membership in AMMA, the prominent association for Malayalam movie artists.

He was formally arrested by the SIT in the rape case against him on September 24. However, he was released as he had been granted anticipatory bail by a sessions court earlier that month.

An FIR under section 376 (rape) of the IPC was registered against Mukesh following the woman's accusation.

He claimed that the charges were the result of his refusal to succumb to blackmail attempts by the complainant.

Multiple FIRs have been registered against several high-profile Malayalam film personalities following allegations of sexual harassment against various directors and actors, sparked by revelations in the Justice K Hema Committee report.
