Video: Nagpur man throws chilli powder during bank robbery, then this happens

A man attempted to rob a State Bank of India (SBI) branch in Maharashtra's Nagpur by throwing chilli powder into the eyes of bank employees, but was caught while he was trying to flee. The accused, identified as 28-year-old Suraj Bhojraj Borkar, is a B.Sc. graduate and is currently unemployed, the police said.

He was allegedly caught while attempting to flee with Rs 4 lakh in cash from the scene. According to the police, he entered the bank posing as a regular customer and approached the cash counter.

He then threw chilli powder into the eyes of bank staff and fled with the cash amid the ensuing confusion, the police said.

The entire incident was captured on CCTV cameras installed inside the bank.

He was caught within 30 minutes of the incident while being chased by bank employees, who were assisted by a few police personnel present at the spot, an official said.

He was intercepted about a kilometre from the SBI branch, the official added.

Police have allegedly recovered the entire amount from Borkar. The police were questioning him to ascertain the exact motive behind the crime and whether anyone else was involved in the crime.

Officials suspect his lack of a job drove him to attempt the robbery.
