Prime Minister Narendra Modi frequently enquired about the safe return of Indian-origin US astronaut Sunita Williams, who was stranded at the International Space Station for nine months, former Isro chief S Somnath said on Tuesday.
Responding to the Prime Minister’s letter, where he referred to Sunita Williams as one of India’s most illustrious daughters, Somnath said that Modi had shown “genuine concern for the well-being of a daughter of Indian origin”.
Sharing the Prime Minister's letter, the former Isro chief wrote,”A touching message to Astronaut Sunita Williams from our Hon. PM Modiji. Hon. PM used to enquire with me as well about her safe return, which showed genuine concerns for the wellbeing of an India origin daughter. Sunita, we all wait for sharing your experience when you are back”.
PM Modi has written to Williams, who is scheduled to return to Earth early on Wednesday, and invited her to visit India. The letter, written on March 1 and sent through former Nasa astronaut Mike Massimino, was shared on X by Union Science and Technology Minister Jitendra Singh.
"Even though you are thousands of miles away, you continue to remain close to our hearts. The people of India are praying for your good health and success in your mission. After your return, we are looking forward to seeing you in India. It will be a pleasure for India to host one of its most illustrious daughters," the Prime Minister said in the letter.
Referring to the unexpected delays, he also said that "Recent developments have yet again showcased your inspirational fortitude and perseverance".
The Prime Minister added he had enquired about Williams' wellbeing while meeting President Donald Trump and his predecessor Joe Biden during his visits to the US.
Sunita Williams and Butch Wilmore bid farewell to the International Space Station, departing aboard a SpaceX capsule alongside two other astronauts. The capsule, undocked on Tuesday, is scheduled for a splashdown off the Florida coast around 3.30 am Indian Time.
