Film producer SA Chandrasekhar said he was proud and happy as his son, actor-politician Vijay, continued to lead in the Tamil Nadu Assembly election results. Speaking to the news agency ANI, the veteran filmmaker said Vijay had shown strong confidence over the past two years and had always believed he could become the Chief Minister of the state.
With the final results still awaited, early trends showed Vijay's Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) making a strong debut in the 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly elections and leading in over 100 seats. Celebrations began outside Vijay’s residence as the early leads came in, while security around his home was tightened.
Chandrasekhar said both he and his wife were delighted by the developments. "I am very proud and happy - both me and my wife. My wishes to my son. I have seen over the last two years that his confidence level has been fantastic, and his belief that 'I will come now as Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu.' Not even 1 per cent doubt was there with Vijay, that is his confidence level. I appreciate that attitude. First of all, for a leader, that boldness, to stand without an alliance, is admirable. So, it's a good thing for Tamil Nadu and its people. I think it's a historic success, a historic victory for Vijay," he said.
He also spoke about his wife's reaction as the trends unfolded, saying she was overwhelmed with happiness. Quoting her, he said, “I am so happy," and added, “She is not only his mother, she is the first fan of Vijay. Today, she is so happy."
Vijay's blockbuster debut in Tamil Nadu politics
As counting continues for the Tamil Nadu Assembly elections, actor Vijay's Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) has surged ahead, disrupting a political landscape long dominated by the DMK and AIADMK. Just two years after its formation, the debutant party appears poised to script a dramatic upset in the state.
Comparisons between Vijay's political popularity and actor-politicians MG Ramachandran (MGR) and NT Rama Rao (NTR) are being drawn by various observers. A video circulating on social media showed increased security outside his residence, with several uniformed officers and security personnel deployed there in view of his large fan base.
Security arrangements around Vijay's home were further stepped up as celebrations gathered pace. Actor Trisha Krishnan, a frequent co-star, considered a close friend of Vijay, also arrived at his residence as supporters marked the early leads.
