A double murder in South Delhi’s Lajpat Nagar has sent shockwaves through the national capital after a woman and her teenage son were found brutally killed in their home on Wednesday night.
According to Delhi Police, the incident came to light around 9:43 pm on July 2, when Kuldeep Sewani, the husband of the deceased, contacted authorities after his repeated calls to his wife and son went unanswered. He also reported noticing bloodstains on the stairs and gate of their residence.
A police team including the Station House Officer (SHO) reached the scene and broke open the locked door. They discovered the lifeless bodies of Ruchika Sewani, 42, and her 14-year-old son.
Ruchika was found dead in the bedroom, while her son’s body was located in the bathroom. Both appeared to have been attacked with a sharp-edged weapon, police said.
Ruchika Sewani co-owned a garment shop in the Lajpat Nagar Market along with her husband. Their son was a student in Class 10.
The main suspect, identified as Mukesh, 24, originally from Bihar and currently residing in nearby Amar Colony, was employed by the Sewanis as a driver and helper in their shop. He was apprehended by police while allegedly trying to flee.
During initial interrogation, Mukesh reportedly confessed to the killings. He told investigators that a recent scolding by Ruchika triggered the violent act.
Police have registered a case and further investigation is underway.
