External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar received warm compliments from Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto as he and Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived for a bilateral meeting on the sidelines of the G20 Summit in Brazil. As Jaishankar introduced himself, the Indonesian President said, "I know you, you are very famous."
The praise prompted a chuckle from PM Modi as Jaishankar and Subianto shook hands before proceeding for the bilateral meeting. Jaishankar, known for his extraordinary sharpness and efficiency, has been credited for shaping an assertive foreign policy while navigating various geopolitical challenges.
During his meeting with the Indonesian President, PM Modi discussed cooperation in sectors such as trade and commerce, health, and security. This was the first meeting of the two leaders after the election of Prabowo Subianto as Indonesian President.
"The two leaders reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening bilateral ties in the framework of their Comprehensive Strategic Partnership. Both leaders noted that India and Indonesia are commemorating 75 years of the establishment of diplomatic relations and called for celebrating the occasion in a befitting manner," the MEA said in a statement.
Recently, a video of Prabowo's spirited phone call congratulating Donald Trump on his re-election as US President went viral. Subianto, a former Army commander, referenced his American "training" and called Trump "sir" multiple times.
"Wherever you are, I am willing to fly to congratulate you personally, sir," Prabowo can be heard saying in the three minute-long video. Trump said he was "proud" of Prabowo for doing a "great job" in Indonesia, while praising his English. "Your English is so good," Trump said.
