After days of intense heat and humid conditions, Delhi-NCR is set for a dramatic weather change on Monday as a powerful storm system approaches the region, bringing dust storms, gusty winds, thunderstorms and spells of moderate to heavy rainfall.

Meteorologists have warned that a dust storm with wind speeds of 60-90 kmph is likely to sweep across Delhi, Noida, Gurugram, Ghaziabad and Faridabad between 3 pm and 5 pm. The dust storm is expected to be followed by thunderstorms and widespread rain, offering much-needed relief from the prevailing hot weather.

According to weather forecasts, the most intense phase of rainfall is likely to last between 30 and 50 minutes, with some areas experiencing brief but heavy downpours.

Gusty winds of 50-70 kmph, accompanied by lightning activity, could lead to reduced visibility, traffic disruptions and temporary power outages in some locations.

Authorities have advised residents to avoid outdoor activities during the peak storm period.

The combination of strong winds and blowing dust could create hazardous conditions for motorists, cyclists and pedestrians. People are also being urged to stay away from trees, electric poles and temporary structures that may be vulnerable to strong wind gusts.

The weather system is not limited to Delhi-NCR. Several parts of Haryana, western Uttar Pradesh and adjoining Rajasthan are also expected to be affected over the next few hours.

Areas under alert include Sonipat, Rohtak, Jhajjar, Rewari, Mahendragarh, Hisar, Bhiwani, Charkhi Dadri and Fatehabad in Haryana; Bagpat and Khekra in Uttar Pradesh; and Pilani, Bhiwadi, Sadulpur and Sidhmukh in Rajasthan. These locations could witness dust storms followed by thunderstorms, lightning and light to moderate rainfall.

Meteorologists say the approaching system is being fuelled by a clash between hot, dry air over northwest India and moisture-laden winds moving inland. Such interactions often trigger powerful pre-monsoon thunderstorms across the Indo-Gangetic plains.

While the storms may cause short-term disruption, they are expected to bring a significant drop in temperatures and improve air quality across the region, offering residents a welcome break from the oppressive summer conditions.
