In Short

  • Norwegian journalist Helle Lyng repeatedly interrupted diplomats during Monday night's briefing
  • She questioned India's record on press freedom, minority rights and human rights
  • George cited India's Constitution, elections and vast media landscape in response

An unusually combative exchange at the Ministry of External Affairs’ press briefing in Norway on Monday has thrust senior Indian diplomat Sibi George into the spotlight as he sharply rejected repeated allegations from Norwegian journalist Helle Lyng on press freedom, minority rights and human rights in India.

The tense interaction unfolded during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Norway visit, with Lyng repeatedly interrupting Indian diplomats and at one point questioning why India should be “trusted” on democratic freedoms and rights-related issues.

Responding to her questions, MEA Secretary (West) Sibi George defended India’s democratic structure and accused critics of relying on selective reports published by “godforsaken, ignorant NGOs” without understanding the country’s scale and complexity.

“You know how many stories are up here [in India]. We have a lot of breaking news coming every day in the evening. At least 200 TV channels in Delhi alone, in English, Hindi and multiple languages. People have no understanding of the scale of India,” George said during the exchange.

“They read one or two news reports published by some godforsaken, ignorant NGOs and then come and ask questions,” he added.

The confrontation quickly went viral online, drawing political reactions in India and renewed attention to the veteran diplomat currently handling some of New Delhi’s most sensitive engagements with Europe and West Asia.
