India and other major buyers of Russian oil and gas could face tariffs of up to 100 per cent on their exports to the US under a new Russia sanctions bill moving through the US Congress.
The US House of Representatives cleared a procedural hurdle for the Lindsey O Graham Sanctioning Russia and Iran Act of 2026, and is expected to vote on the legislation on Wednesday. The Senate passed the bill by an 86-11 vote in August.
So, what does the bill propose, and how could it affect India?
WHAT IS RUSSIA SANCTIONS BILL?
The legislation seeks to increase economic pressure on Russia over its war against Ukraine. It includes sanctions targeting Russian officials, financial institutions, the energy sector and vessels involved in sanctions evasion, including the so-called “shadow fleet”.
It would also extend the Iran Sanctions Act, which covers sanctions on Iran's energy sector.
