Meta removes tampons from men’s bathrooms; Mark Zuckerberg faces backlash
by KalingaTV Bureau · KalingaTVMeta, which owns Facebook, is announcing changes to its entire policy ahead of Donald Trump entering office as the 47th President of the United States. The company moves from equity and inclusion training initiatives toward initiatives more aimed at eliminating bias through fairly consistent practices from all groups of people. This move is part of a broader overhaul at Meta, which also includes the termination of its US fact-checking program.
Tampons being removed from the men’s bathrooms of Meta offices has caused an intense dust-up online. News of this has spread like wildfire across social media platforms since Vice President of Human Resources Janelle Gale announced it in an internal memo. With the movement getting a decent amount of criticism as well as support, many social media users expressed their disappointment, saying that Meta’s next step would be to ban empathy from the office altogether. Some have embraced the move, saying that it represents “common sense policies” and is in line with conservative thinking.
Tampons were already removed from men’s bathrooms for nonbinary and transgender employees. Another controversy surrounds the dismantling of the company’s DEI-focused team and its new supplier selection process. The CEO, Mark Zuckerberg, announced that fact-checking would be replaced by a community note system modeled after X. Zuckerberg said that “fact-checkers have been too politically biased and have destroyed more trust than they’ve created.”
Such changes at Meta mark the company’s efforts to comply with the changed legal and policy landscape regarding efforts at diversity, equity, and inclusion in the United States. For some people, the move marked a step in the right direction toward fairness and consistency, but for others, this was a sellout of what the company used to stand for. Only time will tell whether these decisions will strengthen the public image of the company or further polarize opinion as Meta navigates this new landscape.
