FM College case: Girl student who attempted self-immolation passes away, Odisha CM condoles death

Bhubaneswar: In a latest update on the FM college case, the girl student who attempted self-immolation has passed away while being treated at AIIMS Bhubaneswar.

AIIMS Bhubaneswar issued a statement in this regard and declared that the girl has breathed her last. The statement issued reads as follows, “Patient, Ms. Somyashree Bisi, 20 years / F, was brought to casualty on 12/07/25 at 5:15 PM, (brought by and informed by Jyoti Rekha Bhuyan, patient’s friend) referred from DHH, Balasore to AIIMS Bhubaneswar where she was admitted to the Burns Centre ICU.”

Further, “Patient was resuscitated with IV fluids, IV antibiotics, intubated and put on mechanical ventilation. Despite adequate resuscitation and all possible supportive management including renal replacement therapy at Burns ICU, she could not be revived and was declared clinically dead at 11:46 PM on 14/07/25.”

Following the declaration, the Chief Minister of Odisha Mohan Charan Majhi and the Higher Education Minister Suryabanshi Suraj have condoled the death and prayed for the departed soul and promised strictest action possible.

The CM took to his official X handle and wrote, “I am deeply saddened to hear the news of the demise of the female student from Fakir Mohan Autonomous College. Despite the government’s fulfillment of all responsibilities and the tireless efforts of the expert medical team, the victim’s life could not be saved. I pray for the eternal peace of her departed soul and beseech Lord Jagannath to grant strength to her family to bear this irreparable loss.”

He further added, “I assure the family of the deceased student that all those guilty in this case will face the strictest punishment as per the law. For this, I have personally issued instructions to the authorities. The government stands firmly with the family.”

The Higher Education Minister expressed his condolence and wrote, “I am deeply shocked to hear the news of the passing of the female student from Fakir Mohan Autonomous College. Despite all efforts and prayers, we have lost the student.”

He added, “In the meantime, the process of imposing the strictest punishment on the culprits with a zero-tolerance policy has begun. We are taking utmost care to ensure such incidents do not occur in the future.”

“Even so, what has happened should not have happened. I lack the words to condemn such an incident. May the Lord grant strength and courage to the family members. Om Shanti.” he said as he signed off.

It is worth mentioning here that the student had allegedly self-immolated herself, alleging harassment by an Assistant Professor at FM Autonomous College. She had sustained 95 percent burn injuries. She was rushed to AIIMS Bhubaneswar, where she passed away at the late hours on Monday.
