1 killed, dozens injured in train crash near Machu Picchu, Peru

Peru: A tragic train accident has occurred near Peru’s famous Machu Picchu site after two trains collided head-on on the railway leading to the Inca citadel, leaving one person dead and several others injured.
According to rail agency Ferrocarril Transandino, a PeruRail train crashed into another locomotive operated by Inca Rail. The collision happened around lunchtime on the route connecting Ollantaytambo town with Machu Picchu. The track is a single-line route used mainly by tourists.

The prosecutor’s office in Cusco confirmed that the deceased was the driver of the train. Health officials said around 20 passengers are in serious condition. Many others suffered minor injuries. Social media visuals showed damaged trains, broken glass, and injured people receiving treatment near the tracks.
Emergency teams rushed to the remote Andean area. At least 12 ambulances were deployed. Machu Picchu, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, attracts nearly 4,500 visitors daily. The cause of the accident is still under investigation.
