3 including BJP leader burnt alive as car set on fire over mining dispute

Raipur: In a gruesome incident, three people including a BJP leader were killed in Koriya district of Chhattisgarh over sand mining dispute.

The incident took place late Tuesday night in Naugain village under the Sonhat police station limits.

As per reports, a Fortuner SUV was allegedly trapped between trucks, doused with petrol and set on fire.

According to the victim’s family, BJP leader and former Janpad Panchayat President Bharat Singh, popularly known as Lalla Singh had gone to negotiate a settlement in a dispute linked to sand quarry operations. But instead of settlement, he was killed.

The sand quarry in the region was given to Bharat Singh’s family, there was dispute over the transportation of sand and illegal collections. Mining operations in Sonhat, Kailashpur, Telimuda, Beliya and Chhingura had created friction between Bharat Singh’s group and the family of BJP leader Manoj Tripathi for several months.

The Tripathi family reportedly owned tipper trucks used for transporting sand to Baikunthpur. The disagreement allegedly deepened over payments and control of sand extracted from quarries.

As per investigators, the Fortuner SUV carrying Bharat Singh and his associates was allegedly blocked by trucks from both sides, leaving no route for escape. The vehicle was then allegedly doused with petrol and set ablaze. Bharat Singh died inside the burning SUV.

His associates, Virendra Singh, who suffered injuries in the attack, later succumbed during treatment. The third victim, Nagendra Singh, a teacher and cousin of Bharat Singh, also lost his life. Mayank Singh, who was injured in the incident, is undergoing treatment at Apollo Hospital in Bilaspur and remains in critical condition with severe head and facial injuries.

Later, the police arrested four accused  Akshat Tripathi, Vishal Tripathi, Satyaprakash Tripathi and Mannu Tripathi while a search is underway for others.

A case has been registered against nine named accused under serious charges, including murder and attempted murder.
