Over 40 killed, many kidnapped as gunmen target market in Nigeria

Abuja: Over 40 people were killed and many others including women and children were reportedly kidnapped as a group of gunmen targeted a market in in Nigeria’s Niger State, police said on Sunday.
According to media reports, some miscreants entered Kasuwan Daji market in Demo village on motorcycles at around 4.30 PM on Saturday and fired at people indiscriminately. Besides, they torched several stalls before looting food items.
While 40 people were killed, the residents suggested the death toll could be higher as several of them are still missing.

Apart from firing the innocents, the bandits also reportedly kidnapped several locals including women and children. It is suspected that the gunmen came from the National Park Forest near the Kabe district and targeted the Christian community.
The incident of brutal attack came weeks after a group of gunmen had kidnapped more than 300 students and staff of a Catholic school in the state in central Nigeria in November last year. However, all the victims were released after nearly a month.
It is to be noted here that the northern region of the country has been witnessing wave of violence since several months.
