Ujjain: Four people died after allegedly inhaling toxic gas inside a food waste chamber at a private hotel in Madhya Pradesh’s Ujjain district late on Saturday night.
Two other people who entered the chamber to rescue them also fell ill and were taken to hospital.
The incident occurred around 11 pm on October 31 at Shri Ganga Hotel on Ujjain-Dewas Road. According to police, four people entered the chamber, which was used to collect leftover food and other waste, but became trapped inside. Preliminary information suggests that a blockage may have prompted the cleaning operation.
Ujjain Superintendent of Police Pradeep Sharma said the workers may have collapsed after being exposed to gas accumulated inside the confined space.
The toxic fumes may also have made the chamber floor slippery. Police personnel reached the spot and attempted to rescue the victims. However, the chamber’s gate could not be opened easily, and a cutting machine had to be arranged to gain access.
After the four men were pulled out, police personnel administered cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), but they could not be revived.

Doctors subsequently declared them dead at the hospital. Two others who entered during the rescue attempt also experienced breathing difficulties and were hospitalised.
The deceased have been identified as Kamlesh Tamboli, Nitin Valmik, Manoj Meena and Wahid. Their bodies have been sent for post-mortem examination.
The district administration has initiated an investigation to establish how the incident occurred and whether adequate safety arrangements were in place.
Officials are also examining whether the workers entered the chamber for cleaning or fell into it accidentally.
Meanwhile, Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav expressed grief over the deaths and announced financial assistance of ₹4 lakh each for the families of the four victims.
The incident has once again highlighted the dangers of entering enclosed waste chambers without proper safety precautions, as toxic gases can accumulate in such confined spaces and cause sudden loss of consciousness.
