Federal agents kill third person in Minneapolis
by Ellsworth Toohey · Boing BoingU.S. Border Patrol agents fatally shot a 37-year-old Minneapolis man Saturday morning in the Whittier neighborhood, the third person killed by federal agents in the city this month, reports Mother Jones. The victim was a U.S. citizen with no prior criminal record and a permit to carry.
DHS claims agents were "conducting a targeted operation" toward an undocumented immigrant when another man approached with a handgun and "violently resisted" attempts to disarm him. Mayor Jacob Frey said he has seen video of agents "pummeling one of our constituents and shooting him to death."
The shooting sparked protests. Demonstrators dragged dumpsters into streets, chanting "ICE out now." Federal officers responded with batons and flash bangs.
Governor Tim Walz said he spoke to the White House. "Minnesota has had it. This is sickening," he posted. "The President must end this operation. Pull the thousands of violent, untrained officers out of Minnesota."
Saturday's killing comes one day after tens of thousands marched through downtown Minneapolis to protest ICE's presence. Less than three weeks ago, an ICE agent fatally shot Renee Good, a mother of three and U.S. citizen who was acting as a legal observer during an immigration enforcement operation.
It's tempting to call ICE an einsatzgruppen but they'd take it as a compliment.
