Opposition may consider motion against CEC
by GK NEWS SERVICE · Greater KashmirNew Delhi, Aug 18: The Congress on Monday signalled the possibility of taking strong action against Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar, amid an escalating confrontation between the Election Commission and Rahul Gandhi, reports national media quoting sources.
According to sources, opposition parties are considering the option of introducing an impeachment motion against the CEC during the Monsoon Session of Parliament.
The development comes a day after Gyanesh Kumar rejected Gandhi’s allegations of irregularities in Karnataka elections and issued a seven-day ultimatum to either submit an affidavit or apologise.
The dispute began after Gandhi alleged large-scale manipulation of voter rolls in Bengaluru’s Mahadevapura constituency, claiming over one lakh votes were fraudulent. He also accused the Election Commission of tampering with evidence by restricting the retention of CCTV footage. The Election Commission has denied the charges, calling them baseless, while opposition leaders from Congress, RJD and JMM have demanded clarity on Gandhi’s claims. The stand-off has widened the rift between the poll body and the opposition, with Congress hinting that all parliamentary measures remain under consideration.
