World Wildlife Day: PM Modi visits Gir National Park, highlights efforts in wildlife conservation

Prime Minister Modi noted that the population of several key species, including tigers, leopards, and rhinos, has increased over the past decade.
“Over the last decade, the population of tigers, leopards, rhinos have risen too, indicating how deeply we cherish wildlife and are working to build sustainable habitats for animals. #WorldWildlifeDay,” he wrote in a post on X.
To mark the day, PM Modi visited Gir National Park, home to the majestic Asiatic Lion. Reflecting on his visit, he shared his experience and fond memories from his time as Gujarat’s Chief Minister when conservation efforts for the Asiatic Lion were intensified.
“This morning, on #WorldWildlifeDay, I went on a Safari in Gir, which, as we all know, is home to the majestic Asiatic Lion. Coming to Gir also brings back many memories of the work we collectively did when I was serving as Gujarat CM,” he said.
He praised the collective efforts made over the years to protect these lions and highlighted the vital role played by local tribal communities and women in maintaining their habitat.
“In the last many years, collective efforts have ensured that the population of Asiatic Lions is rising steadily. Equally commendable is the role of tribal communities and women from surrounding areas in preserving the habitat of the Asiatic Lion,” he added.
PM Modi also shared pictures from his visit and encouraged people to visit Gir National Park in the future.
“Here are some more glimpses from Gir. I urge you all to come and visit Gir in the future,” he wrote. “Lions and lionesses in Gir! Tried my hand at some photography this morning.”
Reiterating India’s commitment to protecting biodiversity, PM Modi emphasized the importance of preserving wildlife for future generations.

Every species plays a vital role—let’s safeguard their future for generations to come! We also take pride in India’s contributions towards preserving and protecting wildlife.
