PM Modi reaffirms India’s support to restore peace, stability in Nepal
by GK NEWS SERVICE · Greater KashmirNew Delhi, Sep 18: In an exchange today, Prime Minister Narendra Modi conveyed his condolences to Sushila Karki, the newly appointed Prime Minister of Nepal’s Interim Government, following recent tragic events in the country.
Prime Minister Modi also expressed India’s unwavering support for Karki’s efforts to restore peace and stability in Nepal during this tumultuous time.
“Had a warm conversation with Sushila Karki, Prime Minister of the Interim Government of Nepal,” Prime Minister Modi said. “I conveyed heartfelt condolences on the recent tragic loss of lives and reaffirmed India’s steadfast support for her efforts to restore peace and stability. I also extended warm greetings to her and the people of Nepal on their National Day tomorrow,” he added in a post on X.
The tragic loss of lives in Nepal followed days of protests after the administration banned dozens of social media apps, leading to protests by the younger generation, called as “Gen Z” and civil unrest that prompted the resignation of the previous Prime Minister, who faced mounting pressure from widespread demonstrations and destruction of the infrastructure.
In light of the unrest, Sushila Karki, a former Chief Justice with a reputation for impartiality, was appointed as the Interim Prime Minister to guide the country through this transitional phase, as she promised to hold national polls in March 2026. Her appointment through consensus is seen as a pivotal step toward restoring order, and she has promised to prioritise peace-building and constitutional reforms to address the grievances of the people. Karki faces the delicate task of uniting a divided nation and steering it through the uncertain political waters. Modi’s comments reflect India’s longstanding commitment to Nepal’s peace and stability. As a neighbouring country with deep cultural, historical, and diplomatic ties, India has offered both moral and logistical support to Nepal as it navigates its internal challenges.
