President Droupadi Murmu to visit Portugal, Slovakia from April 7-10

New Delhi, Apr 2: The President, Smt. Droupadi Murmu, will embark on State Visits to Portugal and Slovakia from April 7 to 10, 2025, as per an official press release from the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA). The visit aims to strengthen India’s diplomatic and economic ties with both nations. President Murmu will visit Portugal on April 7-8 at the invitation of President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa.

This marks the first Presidential visit from India to Portugal in 27 years, following President K.R. Narayanan’s visit in 1998. The visit is significant as India and Portugal celebrate 50 years of diplomatic relations since their re-establishment.During her stay, President Murmu will engage in high-level discussions, including delegation-level talks with President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa. She will also meet Prime Minister Luis Montenegro and the President of the National Assembly, Jose Pedro Aguiar-Branco.

The MEA stated: “India and Portugal share historic and friendly bilateral ties, which have evolved into a modern, multifaceted, and dynamic partnership. The visit will provide further impetus to our growing relations and cooperation across various sectors.”

Following her visit to Portugal, President Murmu will travel to Slovakia from April 9-10 at the invitation of President Peter Pellegrini. This will be the first visit by an Indian President to Slovakia in 29 years. She is scheduled to hold bilateral meetings with President Peter Pellegrini and Prime Minister Robert Fico, along with a meeting with National Council Speaker Richard Rasi. The MEA emphasised the importance of the visit, stating: “The State Visit reflects India’s commitment to further strengthening and broadening its bilateral ties with Slovakia.” During her visits to both Portugal and Slovakia, President Murmu will also interact with members of the Indian community, highlighting India’s efforts to engage with its diaspora and enhance people-to-people ties.
