New Delhi, Jan 8: A US immigration agent has fatally shot a 37-year-old woman in Minneapolis, triggering sharp criticism from local leaders who rejected the administration’s claim that the killing was an act of self-defence.

BBC reported that the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) said the woman, identified as Renee Nicole Good, was a “violent rioter” who attempted to run over Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents.

Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey disputed that account, calling the shooting a reckless use of power and telling ICE officials to leave the city. Minnesota Governor Tim Walz also questioned the federal version of events and said the state would ensure a full and independent investigation. The shooting occurred on Wednesday morning during an ICE operation amid protests. Video footage circulating on social media appears to show agents confronting Good as she sat in an SUV blocking a residential street, before shots were fired as the vehicle tried to move away. Federal authorities said the agent fired “defensive shots” and was injured, while local officials and witnesses said the woman posed no imminent threat. The incident has sparked protests across Minneapolis and renewed tensions over the Trump administration’s expanded immigration enforcement, which has seen hundreds of federal agents deployed to the city in recent weeks.
