Guwahati:

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Thursday came down heavily on Assam Jatiya Parishad (AJP), raising allegations over the background of its Central Guwahati candidate Kunki Chowdhury and remarks attributed to her mother on social media.

The remark has created a fresh political controversy in the ongoing Assam election campaign.

Speaking to media persons in Khowang, Sarma said he had no objection to Kunki Chowdhury's mother Sujata Gurung Chowdhury being a resident of Sikkim, but alleged that her social media activity was "hurtful to sentiments".

Sarma claimed that she had posted photos of consuming beef on Instagram and made a remark that, according to him, challenged Sanatan Dharma.

Chief Minister Sarma alleged that she had expressed support on social media for individuals such as Sharjeel Imam and Umar Khalid, both of whom have been at the centre of past controversies.

He claimed that her posts included comments perceived as endorsing statements related to the "chicken neck" corridor and questioning religious beliefs, including references to Lord Krishna.

On the other hand, Kunki Chowdhury refuted the allegation. She said that it was a false allegation.

"I have learned that during a media interaction, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma made allegations against my mother and me, which are false. It has been known that they have accepted their defeat in the Central Guwahati constituency. I  came into politics 15 days ago, and the people of Assam and Central Guwahati have showered their love on me," the youngest candidate in Assam polls posted on social media.
