Girl, 10, tragically mauled to death by family's XL American Bully dog named for first time
by Sam Cooper, Hannah Kane, Lauran O'Toole · NottinghamshireLiveA 10-year-old girl named Savannah Bentham tragically died after being bitten by her family's XL Bully in Malton, North Yorkshire, on Friday, according to police reports. In a statement released through North Yorkshire Police, Savannah's grieving family expressed their devastation: "We are utterly shocked and devastated by what happened to Savannah.
"We can't believe we have lost our wonderful girl who we love so much. We thank everyone for their support and kindness as we struggle to come to terms with our loss."
"We ask that our family's privacy is respected while we grieve for Savannah."
Following the tragic incident, North Yorkshire Police have stated that the dog will be put down. The investigation thus far suggests that the attack was "out-of-character" and that Savannah had "a close, loving relationship" with the dog.
A police spokesperson announced that a post-mortem examination was conducted on Sunday evening and an inquest is expected to open and adjourn shortly. Despite immediate medical attention and the help of a public member, Savannah sadly passed away at the scene, the spokesperson added.
“Officers are conducting detailed enquiries covering all aspects of the incident," they said. "One of the lines of enquiry relates to the behaviour of the dog to help explain, as far as possible, why it attacked the girl.”
