Robredo endorses Abalos, Pacquiao
by Bella Cariaso · philstarMANILA, Philippines — Former vice president Leni Robredo on Wednesday endorsed the Senate bids of former interior secretary Benhur Abalos and her former rival for the presidency, boxing icon Manny Pacquiao.
Robredo cited Abalos for his “quiet yet dependable assistance to the city over the years.”
“He has been our friend for a long time, served as mayor of Mandaluyong for many years, became interior secretary – a very good one – and also served as chairman of the Metro Manila Development Authority. Now he’s running for senator,” she said.
Robredo recalled how Abalos extended help to Naga in times of need, especially during Typhoon Kristine.
Abalos thanked Robredo for the endorsement, promising to represent Bicolanos’ hopes in the Senate.
“Let’s scrutinize our candidates. The future of our country over the next six years lies in their hands. Let’s look closely at their accomplishments and platforms,” Abalos said.
Robredo endorsed Abalos during her birthday last Wednesday. Abalos visited her in Naga.
She also accompanied Pacquiao as he campaigned in the city.
The endorsements drew flak online from some Robredo supporters.
