One killed, dozens injured in Kuwait airport strike amid Iran-US tensions

One person has been killed and more than 60 others injured after drone strikes hit Kuwait International Airport, according to local officials, in the latest escalation between Iran and the United States.

Kuwait’s defence ministry described Wednesday’s incident as “criminal Iranian aggression”, while the foreign ministry said several diplomatic missions sustained damage during the attack.

The victim was later identified as an Indian national and India’s foreign ministry confirmed that several other Indian citizens were also injured and urged all sides to avoid further escalation.

Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps later denied responsibility for the strike, claiming the damage was caused by a failed US missile interceptor.

US Central Command rejected that explanation, calling it a “deliberate, calculated and unjustified attack”.

The IRGC had earlier claimed responsibility for missile and drone attacks targeting US military assets in the Gulf, describing them as retaliation for American strikes on Qeshm Island and an Iranian-linked oil tanker in the Strait of Hormuz.

Centcom said US forces carried out “self-defence” strikes on Qeshm Island and intercepted Iranian missiles aimed at Kuwait and Bahrain.

Following the airport strike, Kuwait ordered two Iranian diplomats to leave the country within 24 hours and summoned Iran’s chargé d’affaires.
