Donald Trump says he would meet Iran’s new supreme leader if deal is reached

US President Donald Trump said on Thursday that he would be open to meeting Iran’s new supreme leader Mojtaba Khamenei if negotiations lead to a deal to end the ongoing conflict.

Speaking to reporters in the Oval Office, Trump said a meeting could happen if both sides reached an agreement.

“I don’t want to meet. But if I did meet, I’d be honored to meet him. I’d like to see if we make a deal, but if we make a deal, it’s possible that I would meet him. I’d be okay with it,” Trump said.

When asked whether such talks could take place in the United States, Trump replied: “I haven’t really heard too much about it. I didn’t suggest it, but some people have suggested it.”

The comments come amid continued efforts to negotiate a broader agreement linked to the conflict involving Iran and the United States.

Trump also said he would approach any potential meeting respectfully despite tensions between the two countries.

“I would say I’m not his favorite person, but with that being said, he’s probably a professional,” Trump told reporters.

He added that “in some circles he has a very good reputation, actually.”

The White House has not provided further details about any possible diplomatic talks or timelines for a potential agreement.
