Woman dies following crash between car and van on A71

A 27-year-old woman was pronounced dead at the scene and two men were taken to hospital.

A woman has died following a two-vehicle crash on the A71 between Newmilns and Darvel.

Two men were also taken to hospital following the incident between a car and a van on Thursday morning, October 17.

Emergency services were called to the incident which occurred shortly after 11am and involved a red Ford Focus Zetec and a silver Mercedes Vito.

A 27-year-old woman, the driver of the Ford, was pronounced dead at the scene.

A 24-year-old man, a passenger in the Ford, was taken to the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital in Glasgow with non-life-threatening injuries.

The driver of the Mercedes, a 52-year-old man, was taken to Crosshouse Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Following the crash, the road was closed for around 10 hours and reopened at 9pm.

Sergeant Martin Cunningham said: “Our thoughts are with the family and friends of the woman who died at what is a difficult time for all.

“Enquiries are ongoing to establish the full circumstances and we are asking anyone who saw what happened to get in touch.

“In particular, if you were driving in the area at the time please check your dash-cam to see if you have anything that could help with our investigation.”

Anyone who can assist is asked to call Police Scotland on 101, quoting incident number 1148 of Thursday, October 17.
