Paul Biya of Cameroon has been sworn in for an eighth term as president, at the age of 92. He is the world's oldest head of state. His re-election has sparked violent protests, with opposition leader Issa Tchiroma Bakary rejecting the results and declaring himself the winner.
And with world leaders preparing for the COP30 summit in Brazil, a new report has sounded the alarm across West Africa. The research reveals a direct and devastating link between deforestation and the depletion of water resources in Ghana, Nigeria and Niger. Forests regulate rainfall, recharge groundwater and protect water sources, but they are disappearing at a staggering rate. In Ghana alone, nearly 25,000 hectares vanish every year, while in Niger, 99.5 percent of available freshwater is considered unsafe.
