Gavin Newsom Did Not Hold Back On The 8 Democrats Who Broke Rank To Vote With Republicans On A Government Shutdown Deal
· Yahoo NewsLast night, eight Democrats broke from the party to vote toward reopening the government after nearly 40 days of shutdown.
Why is this break important? Because Democrats were trying to hold out their vote until Republicans agreed on extending a portion of funding for the Affordable Care Act that's set to expire at the end of this year. Without this extension, Americans across the country are likely to face higher insurance bills due to premium hikes.
Republicans famously despise the Affordable Care Act (despite having yet to provide an alternative), so they realllllly didn't want to vote for it.
Instead, the Trump administration withheld SNAP — aka food assistance benefits — from Americans who depend on the program. Think of it as a form of leverage to get Dems to rush to reopen the government.

But surprise, surprise. Withholding food from hungry families is not popular with voters, and Republicans were starting to feel the weight...until last night's vote.
On X, one user wrote, "I was convinced republicans would cave by the holidays. By the time this SNAP stuff started, Trump—and by relation, the republicans—truly became the face of this shutdown. And then those fucking Dems had to go and do this shit. Feckless losers with weak leadership."
