Four contract workers died of suffocation while cleaning a water tank at an under-construction building in Mumbai's Nagpada area, while one has been admitted in a hospital, said the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation on Sunday. 

The workers who were working near Good Luck Motor Training School, Mint Road, Nagpada were taken to JJ Hospital by the Mumbai Fire Brigade (MFB) where four of them were declared dead, the BMC said, reported ANI. 

The deceased were identified as Hasipal Shaikh (19), Raja Shaikh (20), Jiaulla Shaikh (36), and Imandu Shaikh (38), while one Purhan Shaikh (31) was admitted to the hospital.  

The workers had entered a water tank to clean it but passed out inside while doing the job, a fire official said, reported PTI. 

Other people present at the construction site alerted the fire brigade and the five men were taken out of the tank and rushed to the state-run JJ Hospital. However, doctors at the hospital declared four of them dead, an official said. 

BMC officials and local police have reached the spot and a probe is underway, a police official said.

2 Sanitation Workers Die In Delhi 

Last month, at least two sanitation workers were killed while another was injured after they descended into a sewer to clean it in outer Delhi’s Narela. 

The incident occurred when the workers, hired by a private contractor, were cleaning a sewer outside Manisha Devi Apartments. 

A case was registered against unknown persons, said Delhi Police officials adding that they were searching for the contractor and the individual who hired them. 

As per the police, the locals alerted the police that two workers had entered the sewer but had not come out. Before help could arrive, a third worker went inside to rescue them, but he also got trapped. 

The victims were identified as Vijay Mochi (36), Nandu Singh (44), and Anil Kumar (37). While Mochi and Singh died in the incident, Kumar was hospitalised, officials said.
