US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin discussed the 30-day ceasefire proposal in Ukraine over a two-and-a-half hour phone call on Tuesday, the White House said.
The two world leaders began the highly anticipated call as the US administration is looking to persuade the Russian leader to sign-off on the ceasefire proposal to end the war in Ukraine. The two leaders started the call at around 10:00 am ET and ended at around 12:35 pm.
One of the key priorities of the call is securing an agreement on concessions Russia is willing to make, which includes whether it’s willing to withdraw forces from territory it seized from Ukraine in the past three years, according to CNN.
Shortly after the call, Kremlin said Putin has agreed to the Trump's proposal for Russia and Ukraine to stop attacking each other's energy infrastructure for 30 days. Putin told Trump that US and its allies must end military and intelligence assistance to Ukraine to halt hostilities.
The call between the two leaders comes after Ukrainian officials last week agreed to the US proposal during talks in Saudi Arabia led by Secretary of State Marco Rubio. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, however, remains skeptical that Putin is ready for peace as the Russian forces continue to attack Ukrainian territories.
The negotiations to end the Ukraine war started after Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin spoke on phone last month, after the two leaders resumed communication following a long period of silence between the White House and Kremlin.
The US president also hosted Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky for an Oval Office meeting last month which ended on a tensed note with Trump and Vice President JD Vance engaging in a verbal spat with the Ukrainian President.
Zelenskyy is heading to Finland where he will meet Finnish President Alexander Stubb on Wednesday. Finland's Defense Ministry announced last week that it would give a new military aid package to Ukraine worth 200 million Euros.
