Police in Maharashtra are on a hunt to track down the Pune man who is on the run after allegedly raping a young woman inside a bus parked near a police station in the city.
The suspect, identified as Dattatraya Ramdas Gade, is believed to be hiding in a field full of sugarcane plants near his hometown. The police are camping in these fields, which are abundant near Pune.
The cops have deployed drones and sniffer dogs to track down the accused as each sugarcane plant can grow up to 10 feet in height, making it difficult for them to carry out the operation on foot.
According to an NDTV report, quoting sources, the accused slipped through the police dragnet thrown around the city by hiding in a truck carrying vegetables. He reached his hometown where he changed clothes and shoes.
The police have set up 13 special teams to track him down including eight from Crime Branch. The cops also spoke to family members and known associates.
Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde has vowed action in the case saying no one will be spared in connection with the matter. He also called for capital punishment for people who commit such criminal acts.
