Class-12 Student Confesses To Sending Bomb Threats To Delhi Schools

A student has been detained for allegedly sending bomb threats to schools in Delhi. The police are now interrogating him.

At least 23 bomb threats in the recent series of hoax emails to schools in Delhi were sent by a student, a police investigation has revealed. The emails to the different schools in Delhi were sent by a Class-12 student. "During interrogation, the student admitted that he had sent threat emails earlier as well," DCP South, Delhi Police, Ankit Chauhan told news agency ANI.

Schools in the Delhi-National Capital Region received over 100 emails over the last few months that threatened to blow up the premises. This sent them scrambling for evacuation and going online urgently.

The police, bomb squad, and fire brigade personnel, too, had to deal with tough situations every time such an email was received. They could not leave anything to chance and had to scour every inch of the premises of each school that received the threat.

What Is The Punishment For Hoax Bomb Calls Or Emails?

Sending hoax emails and issuing such threats on call that cause panic is a punishable offence in India. The offence can be deemed punishable under the following sections of the Bharatiya Nyay Sanhita:

Section 353: Whoever makes, publishes or circulates any statement, false information, rumour, or report, including through electronic means, is punishable by a fine or imprisonment up to three years or both.

Section 351 (1 and 4): Whoever commits the offence of criminal intimidation (even by remaining anonymous) by treating to cause death or grievous hurt, or to cause the destruction of any property by fire, or to cause an offence punishable with death or imprisonment for life, or with imprisonment for a term which may extend to seven years.

Section: 217: Whoever gives to any public servant any information which he knows or believes to be false, intending thereby to cause, or knowing it to be likely that he will thereby cause, such public servant injury or annoyance of any person, shall be punished with imprisonment of either description for a term which may extend to one year, or with fine which may extend to ten thousand rupees, or with both.

Stricter sections under the UAPA and Disaster Management Act may also be invoke against such persons if the threat is serious enough.

However, minors who play pranks of such bomb threats could be let off with counselling and a warning. They may also be detained if the police and administration see the need.
