Affair, Blackmail, Extortion: As Police Arrest One For Himani Narwal's Murder, Here's What We Know So Far

Two days after the body was discovered, the Haryana Police arrested one man in Delhi. Police also found Narwal's phone from his possession at the time of his arrest.

Himani Narwal Murder Case: The body of a Congress worker named Himani Narwal was found in a suitcase in Haryana on Saturday, March 1. Following this, an investigation was launched, with a Special Investigation Task Force (SIT) formed to probe the murder. Demands for a high-level probe surfaced as a political row erupted in Haryana over the Congress worker's murder.

Four teams of the Rohtak Police are also working on the case and one arrest has been made so far after a man was nabbed on March 3. The arrested suspect has confessed to the crime and made some shocking allegations of blackmail and extortion against Narwal, which her mother has denied. The victim's family has also refused to cremate Narwal till they get justice for their daughter.  

What Is The Himani Narwal Murder Case?

The 22-year-old Congress worker resided in her ancestral home in Rohtak's Vijay Nagar. She had been missing for three days, following which her body was finally dicovered in a suitcase at the Sampla bus stand on the Rohtak-Delhi highway by locals.

Police and SFL team rushed to the crime scene and found out that the age of the deceased was between 20 and 22 years. She had mehendi on her hands and a scarf around her neck.  

Sampla police station SHO Bijendra Singh on Saturday said: "We received information that a dead body has been found in a suitcase on the side of the highway and we are investigating this matter. It seems that this girl has been murdered and her dead body has been thrown here, we are investigating the rest and further action will be taken after registering a case. She is between 20 and 22 years old and the body has just been found, we will identify it and take further action."

On Sunday, Rohtak police examined CCTV footage from Narwal's house to the crime scene, recorded statements from acquaintances, and interrogated two suspects. One accused was then arrested.

Arrested Suspect Alleges Blackmail And Extortion By Narwal

Two days after the body was discovered, the Haryana Police arrested one man in Delhi. He has been identified as Sachin, a resident of Haryana's Bahadurgarh. Police also found Narwal's phone from his possession at the time of his arrest. 

During interrogation, he confessed to the crime, but made several shcoki ng allegations against the Congress worker. He accused Narwal of extorting lakhs of rupees from him and that she was demanding more money from him. He also accused her of blackmailing him, and that he killed her at her Rohtak residence as he was frustrated due to the constant demand for money.

The 30-year-old arrested suspect owns a mobile shop. He became friends with Narwal through social media, and later got into a relatonship with her. Sachin is married and has two children. He claimed that he had given Rs 3 lakh to Narwal, but on March 1 she called him to her house and demanded more money, police sources said.

When he refused, she allegedly began blackmailing him threatening him to release intimate videos. Sachin tried to convince her, but an argument broke out between the two after which he strangled her with a mobile charger cable. He then returned to his shop.

However, he later went back to the victim's house, put her body in a suitcase, and abandoned it at the Sampla bus stand. 

Narwal's Mother Denies Suspect's Allegations, Demands Death Penalty

The Congress worker's mother denied all the accusations made by Sachin against her daughter, stressing that she "did not have a boyfriend".

She also rejected allegations of blackmailing and extortion, saying that her daughter can never take anybody's moeny and that she had instead lent money to people to help them. She also said that the suspect was tarnishing her daughter's image now after killing her.

She then went on to reiterate her demand for the death penalty for the accused involbed in her daughter's murder, adding that merely arresting them was not enough.

Earlier, Narwal's mother had alleged that the victim's political success within the Congress made her a target. She claimed her daughter had been receiving threats, since she was close to the Hooda family and Rahul Gandhi. Images of her walking with Congress MP Rahul Gandhi during his Bharat Jodo Yatra have gone viral on social media.

“The election and the party took my daughter's life. Because of this, she made some enemies. These (the culprits) could be from the party, could be her friends as well...On February 28, she was at home,” she said.

Himani Narwal's family had also denied to perform her last rites till they get justice.

Demanding justice, Narwal's uncle had said: "Whoever the accused is, we want justice. Till the time the identity of the accused is revealed, we will not cremate her. We have had no contact with the police."

Reactions By Political Leaders

Former Haryana chief minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda said on Sunday that he spoke to Rohtak SP about the Himani murder case, adding that police and the government should ensure speedy justice for the family of the victim.

Hooda also offered his condolences to the victim's family and assured support to them from the Congress "The culprit should be identified and punished as per law. The Congress party stands with Himani's family in this hour of grief," Hooda said.

Congress MLA from Rohtak B B Batra called Narwal a good and active worker of the party. "She used to participate in various programmes and she had also participated in the 'Bharat Jodo Yatra'... Those who have committed the crime should be severely punished," Batra said. 

Haryana BJP MP Kiran Chaudhary also demanded ‘severe’ punishment for the murder of Congress worker. It is a very sad incident. I condemn such incidents that took place in society. The criminals should be given severe punishment as soon as possible, she said.
