At least 6 people lost their lives and several were feared dead after an uncontrolled truck crashed into a vehicle carrying devotees coming from the Maha Kumbh Mela in the Ghazipur district of Uttar Pradesh on Friday evening, officials said.
According to a report by India Today, the accident occurred in the Kusmi Kala area near the Nandganj police station. During the time of the accident, the pickup van reportedly had around 20 passengers on board.
All the injured were transported to Ghazipur Medical College for medical treatment. The District Magistrate, accompanied by police and administrative officials, has arrived at the site to supervise the rescue efforts. Meanwhile, the truck driver fled the scene following the accident.
Bus Crashes Into Vehicle On Prayagraj-Gorakhpur Highway
Friday's mishap in Ghazipur follows another accident on the Gorakhpur-Varanasi Highway near the Sarai Chauraha in Gagaha where at least 10 people were injured. The accident took place when a state bus, returning with pilgrims from the Maha Kumbh in Prayagraj, was hit by another bus.
A second bus speeding from behind crashed into the state bus as it stopped to drop a few passengers at Sarai Chauraha near Gagaha. The collision occurred around 11 AM. The speeding bus was coming from the Raptinagar Depot.
The impact of the collision caused utter chaos on the highway. The injured were immediately rushed to the nearby Community Health Center (CHC), from where some were referred to the district hospital for further treatment.
Residents of the area and bystanders played a crucial role in rescuing the injured passengers from the bus and alerting the police. The Gagha police reached the spot and, with the help of locals and ambulances, sent all the injured to the CHC. Those with severe injuries were later referred to the district hospital.
Preliminary investigations suggest that the accident was caused by speeding and negligence. SP (South) Jitendra Kumar stated that efforts are underway to gather more information about the injured passengers, and no fatality has been reported as of now.
The incident comes days after at least 30 people died and 60 were injured in the pre-dawn stampede in the Sangam area of the Maha Kumbh in Prayagraj as millions of pilgrims gathered to take a holy dip on the occasion of 'Mauni Amavasya'.
