Several farmer leaders including Sarwan Singh Pandher and Jagjit Singh Dallewal were detained by the Punjab Police in Mohali on Wednesday while they were headed to Shambhu and Khanauri protest sites.
The farmers were detained in Mohali after they clashed with the Punjab Police as they were heading for the Shambhu border protest site. The group of farmers had a meeting with a central delegation, including Union Agriculature Minister, after which they clashed with security personnel while they were heading to the Khanauri and Shambhu border points, where the protesting farmers have been camping since February 13 last year.
The Punjab Police also demolished the tents erected by farmers at the Punjab-Haryana border, where they were sitting on a protest over various demands.
Apart from Pandher and Dallewal, Abhimanyu Kohar, Kaka Singh Kotra and Manjit Singh Rai have been detained, farmer leader Mangat said, amid reports suggesting a heavy police force has been deployed near Shambhu and Khanauri border points as well.
On the police action at the Shambhu order, Patiala SSP Nanak Singh said, "Farmers had been protesting at Shambhu Border for a long time. Today, in the presence of Duty Magistrates, Police cleared the area after they were given proper warning. A few people showed a willingness to go home. So, they were sent home on a bus. In addition, the structures and vehicles here are being moved. The entire road will be cleared and opened for traffic. Haryana Police will also begin their action. Once it opens from their side, the movement on highway will resume. We did not need to use any force because there was no resistance. Farmers cooperated well and they sat in buses by themselves."
Earlier in the day, a fresh round of meeting was held between farmer leaders and a central delegation in Chandigarh to discuss various demands of the farmers.
However, the meeting remained inconclusive, even as the Union ministers attending the talks called the farmers' interests paramount.
During the three-hour meeting, Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan said the talks would continue and the next meeting will be held on May 4.
The next meeting will take place on May 4, Chouhan said after the meeting. The police action came after the meeting as farmer leaders entered Mohali from Chandigarh.
Police personnel from various districts have been deployed near the Shambhu and Khanauri border points where the Samyukta Kisan Morcha (Non-Political) and Kisan Mazdoor Morcha are sitting in their protest since February last year.
