Union Sports Minister Mansukh Mandaviya on Monday attacked the Congress and Trinamool Congress over their recent remarks at Cricketer Rohit Sharma calling it "deeply shameful" and "outright pathetic".

The response from the Sports Minister come after Congress spokesperson Shama Mohamed caused a stir on social media with a controversial post directed at the Indian captain.

"Congress and TMC should leave sportspersons alone as they are fully capable of handling their professional lives. Remarks made by leaders from these parties, indulging in body shaming and questioning an athlete’s place in the team, are not only deeply shameful but also outright pathetic," Mansukh Mandaviya said in a post on X.

"Such comments undermine the hard work and sacrifices that our sportspersons make to represent the country on the global stage," he added.

The Congress has reprimanded Shama Mohamed for fat-shaming Rohit Sharma and asked her to delete her social media posts in which she made the comments.

Meanwhile, Trinamool Congress MP Sougata Roy came in support of the Congress spokesperson saying Mohamed did not said anything wrong about the skipper, adding his “performance has been quite poor". Roy endorsed his reaction to the controversy long after the Congress reprimanded her and asked her to remove her social media posts on Monday.

What Is the 'Fat-Shaming' Row?

In her now-deleted post, Shama said Rohit is fat for a sportsman. Need to lose weight! And of course the most unimpressive Captain India has ever had! The comments, made on X on Sunday night, drew backlash from many, including BJP leaders.

Her remarks came amid the Indian cricket team's undefeated run at the ongoing Champions Trophy. The Congress asserted that Mohamed's remarks about the cricketing legend do not reflect the party's position.

Congress' media and publicity department head Pawan Khera said, "Dr. Shama Mohammed, National Spokesperson of the Indian National Congress, made certain remarks about a cricketing legend that do not reflect the party's position. She has been asked to delete the concerned social media posts from X and has been advised to exercise greater caution in the future."

Meanwhile, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has also reacted to the controversy criticising the Congress leader for the post.

Calling the remarks 'unfortunate' BCCI Secretary Devajit Saika said that the comments has come from a person who is on a responsible position.

"It's very unfortunate that this kind of remark for our captain (Indian cricket team captain Rohit Sharma) has come from a person who is on a responsible post, especially at a time when Team India is playing an ICC tournament and the team is all set to play the semi-final match," Saikia told ANI.
