Protest against the Waqf Amendment Act was organized in several cities of India. In Kolkata's Ramlila Maidan, a massive demonstration took place on Friday. Demonstrations were also organised in Mumbai, Kolkata, and other cities. The students from Aliah University in Kolkata staged a march from the campus to the Park Circuit in opposition to the recently passed bill. The protestors carried banners and placards expressing their displeasure with the proposed amendments.
Protest was also organised in Mumbai against the Waqf Act. AIMIM National Spokesperson Waris Pathan said that the Byculla Masjid trustees called us for a protest against the black Waqf law brought by the Modi government.
"Our peaceful protests will continue across the country since the matter is with the Supreme Court and the hearing will be held on 16 April... We want this law to be taken back just like the farm laws were repealed...," Waris Pathan said.
Shia cleric Maulana Syeb Kalbe Jawad said that the masks fell off the faces of Nitish Kumar and Chandrababu Naidu. He called them fake secularists.
"They have all joined the RSS. It is essential to teach them a lesson...Secular structure of India is under threat. Seculars, which includes both Muslims and non-Muslims will have to rise against this...Right now Muslims are the target but the second target is Dalits...".
The protests were also reported in Patna and Lucknow, where the community leaders warned of intensified agitation.
The Waqf (Amendment) Bill, 2025, was passed in the Lok Sabha last week and cleared by the Rajya Sabha in the early hours of Friday after a marathon debate. President Droupadi Murmu gave her assent to the bill soon after.
The amended law aims to regulate the administration of Waqf properties — endowments made for religious or charitable purposes — and seeks to enhance transparency in property management, improve coordination between Waqf Boards and local bodies, and safeguard heritage sites.
