Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin and Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) MLAs staged a protest in the state assembly on Thursday, wearing black ribbons in opposition to the Waqf Amendment Bill, which was passed in the Lok Sabha on Thursday despite strong resistance from several parties.

Addressing the assembly, CM Stalin called the passage of the bill an "attack on Indian democracy," criticising the Union government for pushing it through at 2 AM with the support of its alliance partners, as per reports. He announced that DMK will approach the Supreme Court to challenge the bill, arguing that it undermines the autonomy of the Waqf Board and poses a threat to the minority Muslim population.

DMK’s Resolution Against The Bill

CM Stalin reminded the House that on March 27, the Tamil Nadu Assembly passed a unanimous resolution (with the exception of BJP members) urging the Union government to withdraw the bill. He emphasised that the bill had been widely opposed by political parties across the country, stating, as per ANI: "Most political parties in India have opposed the bill. It is severely condemnable that this bill was passed in parliament despite much opposition. 232 parliament members voted against it, and 288 members voted in favour of it. It's not a normal thing that, despite its passing, 232 is the highest number."

DMK To Move Supreme Court

Stalin declared amid thumping of desks from the Treasury benches, as per PTI, "I would like to inform you that a case will be filed in the Supreme Court on behalf of the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) against this controversial amendment. Tamil Nadu will fight against the Union government's law which destroys the autonomy of the Waqf Board and threatens the minority Muslim population."

Tamil Nadu Deputy Chief Minister Udhayanidhi Stalin also reaffirmed the DMK’s stand, stating: "We are opposing it. The CM has already passed a resolution against it."

Meanwhile, Rajya Sabha is set to take up the Waqf Amendment Bill for discussion at 1 PM, with eight hours allotted for deliberations.
