Chaos In Rajasthan Assembly Over Remark On Indira Gandhi, Suspended Congress MLAs To Spend Night In House

During a heated debate in the Rajasthan Assembly, six Congress MLAs were suspended after a BJP minister referred to Indira Gandhi as "aapki dadi," sparking chaos.

Six Congress MLAs in Rajasthan were suspended on Friday as Chaotic scenes unfolded in the state Legislative Assembly. The furore sparked after the BJP minister referred to former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi as "aapki dadi" in an apparent jibe at Lok Sabha Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi. 

The assembly was adjourned thrice as many Congress legislators began chanting slogans and demanded an apology while some trooped into the well of the House. 

The suspended MLAs have decided to spend the night in the well of the House and arrangements are being made for their bedding and dinner. 

The controversy began when Social Justice and Empowerment Minister Avinash Gehlot was answering a question on hostels for working women. He pointed to the members of the opposition and said, "In the 2023-24 budget also, like always, you named the scheme after your 'dadi". 

Leader of Opposition Tika Ram Jully strongly objected to the statement and asked whether he was referring to former PM Indira Gandhi. The LoP also demanded that the statement be struck from the record as several Congress MLAs began sloganeering and heading towards the well. 

While Rajasthan Congress chief and Laxmangarh MLA Govind Singh Dotasara demanded an apology from the minister, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Jogaram Patel insisted that there was nothing unparliamentary about the word 'dadi'.

The House was adjourned for half an hour and then again at 2 pm and for a third time at 4 pm. When the House proceedings resumed, government chief whip Jogeshwar Garg said the opposition had crossed limits and requested the suspension of six Congress legislators. 

The proposal was passed by a voice vote and Speaker Vasudev Devnani adjourned the house until Monday, after which Congress MLAs began a protest in the well of the Assembly. 

Govind Singh Dotasara, Ramkesh Meena, Amin Kagzi, Jakir Hussain, Hakim Ali and Sanjay Kumar were the legislators who have been suspended for the remaining term of the Budget Session.
