Kolkata Doctor Rape and Murder Case: A court in Sealdah on Monday framed charges against Sanjay Roy the main accused in RG Kar Medical College and Hospital rape and murder case of an on-duty trainee doctor on August 9.
After 87 days of the gruesome rape and murder incident which shocked the nation, the court has framed charged and the trial started against accused Sanjay Roy.
The hearing will continue every day from November 11.
On the other hand, a special CBI court in Alipore completed hearing the case pertaining to the alleged financial corruption in the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital by the ex-Principal Sandip Ghosh of the college, who was arrested by the CBI.
It is alleged that two vendors Biplab Singh and Suman Hazra laundered money for Sandip Ghosh and he took 20% commission on each tender. Singha and Hazra were arrested along with Ghosh.
Biplab Singh's lawyer has called the corruption case a "deep conspiracy" theory by CBI as they could not arrest anyone in rape and murder case.
'Not only RG Kar, Ma Tara Traders has supplied equipment to several hospitals...CBI can't arrest anyone in rape-murder case. That's why they are trying to frame the corruption case,' the lawyer representing the leader of Tara Traders Biplab Singh.
The gruesome rape and murder of the trainee doctor had triggered nationwide unrest after there were protests across the country by medical professionals, demanding better safety conditions at the workplace.
Incidently, first the Calcutta High Court took suo motu cognisance of the case and transferred probe to CBI from Kolkata police after irregularities were flagged in reporting the crime by the hospital and filing FIR by the Police.
Later, the Supreme Court also took suo motu cognisance of the case and ordered deployment of CRPF at the hospital and college. The top court is overseeing the probe by the CBI. The apex court also constituted a National Task Force (NTF) to establish enforceable protocols and norms to ensure safer and improved work environments for Doctors in India.
