US President Donald Trump on Monday reiterated his claim that his administration helped avert a nuclear conflict between India and Pakistan, asserting that the United States used trade as leverage to bring the two nuclear-armed neighbours to a ceasefire. At a press briefing held at the White House, Trump said, “On Saturday, my administration helped broker a full and immediate ceasefire, I think, a permanent one between India and Pakistan, ending a dangerous conflict of two nations with lots of nuclear weapons.”
He described the situation as a “very heated” one and praised the leadership of both countries. “India and Pakistan were going at it hot and heavy, and it was seemingly not going to stop,” he said. “I’m very proud to let you know that the leadership of India and Pakistan was unwavering, powerful… from the standpoint of having the strength and the wisdom and fortitude to fully know and to understand the gravity of the situation.”
Trump claimed that he offered trade incentives to both countries to bring them to the negotiating table. “I said, ‘Come on, we’re going to do a lot of trade with you guys. Let’s stop it. Let’s stop it. If you stop it, we’re doing trade. If you don’t stop it, we’re not going to do any trade’,” he said, adding, “People have never really used trade the way I used it, that I can tell you.”
He further remarked, “We’re going to do a lot of trade with Pakistan. We’re going to do a lot of trade with India. We’re negotiating with India right now. We’re going to be soon negotiating with Pakistan, and we stopped a nuclear conflict.”
Claiming credit for defusing tensions, Trump said, “I think it … could have been a bad nuclear war. Millions of people could have been killed. So I’m very proud of that. I also want to thank Vice President (JD) Vance and Secretary of State (Marco) Rubio for their work and efforts, they worked very hard on that.”
He reiterated that the US achieved this by using its trading power effectively. “We did some great things with trade with India and Pakistan. Really helped the situation. Very heated situation. Could have lost millions of people, more than millions, I mean, many millions of people.”
On Saturday, Trump had claimed that India and Pakistan had agreed to a “full and immediate ceasefire” after “a long night of talks mediated by the United States.” He also posted on Truth Social offering to work with both countries towards a “solution on Kashmir” and called the cessation of hostilities a “historic and heroic decision.”
'No Reference To Trade In Talks': India Denies Trump's Claim On How US Negotiated Ceasefire
However, Indian government sources in New Delhi strongly denied any third-party involvement in the ceasefire agreement. According to the sources cited by PTI, the Director Generals of Military Operations (DGMOs) of India and Pakistan reached an understanding to halt all military actions — on land, air and sea — with immediate effect.
“There was no reference to trade in talks between top leaders of India and the US during the India-Pakistan military conflict,” the sources said, in response to Trump’s remarks. They clarified that US Vice President JD Vance spoke to Prime Minister Narendra Modi on 9 May, after Operation Sindoor commenced, but trade was not discussed.
Additionally, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio had spoken to External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar on 8 and 10 May, and to National Security Adviser Ajit Doval on 10 May. “There was no reference to trade in any of these discussions,” the sources asserted.
