India has blocked access to the official X (formerly Twitter) account of the Pakistan government, marking a sharp diplomatic escalation just a day after it indefinitely suspended the Indus Waters Treaty. The action follows the terror attack in Jammu and Kashmir's Pahalgam that left 26 people, mostly tourists, dead — triggering widespread condemnation and security alerts across the country.
Security Tightened Across Himachal Borders
In the wake of the Pahalgam attack, Himachal Pradesh has ramped up security, especially in districts bordering Jammu and Kashmir. Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu directed law enforcement agencies to intensify surveillance and ensure preparedness against any possible threat.
“When such incidents happen, there is definitely an alert. I have told police personnel to intensify their activities on the borders adjoining Jammu and Kashmir,” Sukhu stated, while condemning the attack as a “cowardly act”. The state has been placed on high alert, with Chamba and Kangra districts seeing a particularly heavy security presence.
He added, “Our hearts go out to the victims and their families during this incredibly painful time. We stand in unwavering solidarity with the families of the victims and with all those affected by this barbaric act.”
Political Unity in Condemnation
Leaders across the political spectrum have denounced the attack in strong terms. Himachal Governor Shiv Pratap Shukla called it “an act of cowardice”, saying, “It is act of cowardice the way helpless people were killed. I think this is their cruelty and they are not humans.”
Former Chief Minister and Leader of Opposition Jai Ram Thakur labelled the assault “inhuman” and a “blot on humanity.” He said, “This heinous act is not only a blot on humanity but also a cowardly attempt to destroy peace and goodwill. Such cruelty cannot be tolerated in any civilised society.”
State Congress President Pratibha Singh, too, voiced her outrage: “No terrorist, separatist involved in this attack should be spared at any cost. Any kind of separatist thinking or incident cannot be accepted at any level in the country.”
Public Anger Spurs Protests
Beyond the corridors of power, the general public has also expressed fury and grief. In Bilaspur district's Ghumarwin, markets remained shut until the afternoon as traders observed a symbolic protest. They also carried out a rally demanding strict action against the perpetrators.
Shimla witnessed similar demonstrations, with citizens and political leaders jointly voicing their anger.
State BJP Co-Incharge Sanjay Tandon, who participated in the protests, remarked, “This cowardly terrorist attack on innocent civilians is an attack on humanity, which cannot be tolerated under any circumstances.”
Diplomatic Fallout Continues
The suspension of Pakistan’s official X account in India appears to be part of a broader diplomatic retaliation. On the day prior, India had announced an indefinite pause on the decades-old Indus Waters Treaty with Pakistan, further straining already tense bilateral ties.
While the Centre is yet to officially comment on the account suspension, the move sends a strong message in response to what Indian authorities and leaders have described as an “unacceptable and barbaric” act of terrorism.
