In a post on X, Adams wrote: “I have always put New York’s people before politics and party…I am running for mayor in the general election because our city needs independent leadership that understands working people.”

The post was followed by a video in which Adams said that although he was still a Democrat, he would “forgo the Democratic primary for mayor and appeal directly to all New Yorkers as an independent candidate in the general election.”
